Why Lifting Lighter, Faster, Builds a Bigger Deadlift

Here's something that confuses a lot of lifters the first time they hear it: one of the best ways to make 200kg feel easier is to spend serious time pulling 140kg — as fast as you physically can.
Not grinding it. Not adding reps. Moving a weight you could lift ten times like it's trying to escape through the ceiling. Strength coaches have used this for decades — you'll hear it called speed work, dynamic effort, or compensatory acceleration — and it's one of the most underused tools in the average gym-goer's training.
Strength is a skill, and speed is part of it
A maximal deadlift isn't just about how much muscle you have. It's about how much of that muscle your nervous system can switch on, how fast it can switch it on, and how well-drilled your technique is under load.
Think of your muscles as an engine and your nervous system as the driver. Most people train the engine and ignore the driver. Speed work trains the driver.
When you pull 140kg with the genuine intent to move it as fast as possible, a few important things happen:
You recruit high-threshold motor units early. Your body normally saves its biggest, strongest muscle fibres for genuinely heavy loads or the desperate end of a hard set. But maximal intent — trying to accelerate the bar violently — forces those fibres to fire even at submaximal weight. You're teaching your body to bring its full workforce to the job immediately, which is exactly what a max attempt requires.
You develop rate of force development. A heavy deadlift is usually lost in the first second — the bar breaks the floor slowly, drifts, and the lift dies at the knees. Rate of force development is how quickly you can go from zero to maximum force, and it's trained by moving loads fast, not by grinding. Build a more explosive break off the floor and the bar carries momentum through the exact spot where heavy pulls usually stall.
You get thousands of perfect technique reps. At 90%+, your technique is surviving. At 70%, it can be rehearsed — same setup, same brace, same bar path, rep after rep, with enough speed to keep it honest. Come max day, the movement runs on autopilot because you've grooved it hundreds of times at speeds where nothing breaks down.
You can train the lift more often. Heavy pulling beats you up; recovery costs are brutal. Speed work delivers a potent training stimulus with a fraction of the recovery bill, so you can practise the lift frequently without falling apart. Frequency of quality practice is a quiet superpower in strength training.
The 140-to-200 example, played out
Say your deadlift max is 190kg and it's been stuck there for a year. Every time you approach it, the bar crawls off the floor and dies mid-shin.
Now imagine eight weeks where, once a week, you pull 4–5 sets of 1–3 reps at around 130–145kg — roughly 65–75% — with total violence of intent. Every rep from a dead stop. Every rep accelerating the whole way up. Full rest between sets so speed never drops. If a rep looks slow, the set's over.
What changes? The break off the floor sharpens. Your setup becomes identical every time because you've rehearsed it close to a hundred times. Your nervous system learns that when your hands touch a bar, the instruction is fast. Then one day 170kg flies up like a warm-up, and 200kg — a weight that used to feel bolted down — breaks the floor with speed to spare. The bar isn't lighter. You've just become a lifter who applies force faster.
How to actually use this
You don't need a full Westside-style setup to benefit. Some honest guidelines:
Use 60–75% of your true max for the main lift. Keep reps low — 1 to 3 for deadlifts, 2 to 3 for squats and presses — over 4 to 5 sets. The bar should visibly move fast on every rep; the moment it slows, you're done for the day. Rest properly between sets (60–120 seconds minimum) because this is neurological training, not conditioning. And pair it with your heavy work across the week or the block — speed work supplements maximal lifting, it doesn't replace it.
Two mistakes kill this method. The first is loading too heavy, turning speed day into a mediocre heavy day — the magic is in the velocity, and ego ruins it. The second is going through the motions: 140kg moved casually is just a light deadlift. The intent to accelerate is the exercise.
The bigger lesson
The bar doesn't know how much weight is on it. It only knows how much force you're applying and how fast. Train yourself to be violent with submaximal weights, and maximal weights stop being a fight.
If your top-end lifts have been stuck for a while, the answer probably isn't more grinding. It might be less weight, more speed, and eight weeks of patience.
